Food Upcycling Studies for Rebirth of Rice By-products

With climate change and sustainability increasingly shaping consumer values, demand for environmentally
friendly products is a growing global trend. Businesses are also embracing ESG management,
further driving the need for eco-conscious innovation. Food companies, in particular,
are called upon to develop and offer products that align with these principles.

At LOTTE R&D Center, a key focus is on upcycling food by-products generated during ingredient processing
and production to create added value. Upcycled by-products can be reintegrated into products,
promoting sustainable resource recirculation. One successful example is the upcycling of rice by-products
from the manufacture of rice wine and other alcoholic beverages.

Development of a Sustainable, Ultralight Bottled Water Packaging

In 2021, the Ministry of Environment approved the use of nitrogen charging in bottled spring water production
as a way to reduce plastic usage. In collaboration with LOTTE Chilsung, a pilot operation was jointly conducted.
Since this method was unprecedented at the time, LOTTE R&D Center took charge of designing bottled water packaging
that is attractive, safe, and convenient, while ensuring it performs reliably during distribution of nitrogen-charged spring water.

Resource Circularity R&D: Development of Packaging from Recycled Plastic

Plastic pollution is a global crisis demanding urgent action.
LOTTE R&D Center is dedicated to researching plastic waste recycling technologies
to mitigate environmental harm and promote a circular economy for plastics.
